If you’ve ever dreamed of watching America’s landscapes roll by from a cozy window seat while sipping wine, an overnight luxury train trip might be exactly what you must be looking for. The slow pace, the soft hum of the train, and waking up in a completely new state, it’s such a peaceful way to travel.
One of the most popular options is the Amtrak California Zephyr, which runs between Chicago and San Francisco. The full trip takes around 51 hours and covers almost 2400 miles, but many travellers choose to do just one overnight segment.

The views of the Rocky Mountains and Sierra Nevada are stunning, especially around sunset. A Roomette(small private room for two with beds) starts at around $600, including meals. The food isn’t fancy but it’s warm, hearty, and served in the dining car with big windows and friendly staff.
If you’re into something a little more upscale and old school, check out Rocky Mountaineer’s “Rockies to the Red Rocks” route, which runs from Denver, Colorado to Moab, Utah.
It’s a two day luxury train journey with an overnight hotel stay in between, and the total distance is about 375 miles.
While it doesn’t have traditional sleeping cars, the glass domed coaches, gourmet meals, and stunning desert scenery make up for it. The SilverLeaf Plus package starts at about $1,500 per person. It’s pricey, but everything feels curated.
Another favourite is the Coast Starlight, going from Los Angeles to Seattle. It’s around a 35 hour journey covering 1377 miles along the Pacific Coast, with dramatic ocean views and forests passing by. If you splurge on a bedroom suite, prices can reach $1,200+, but even a Roomette gives you privacy and access to the exclusive lounge.
Luxury train travel in the U.S. isn’t fast, and its definitely not cheap, but it’s an experience that makes the journey feel just as special as the destination.
